TMJ and TMD
The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is where several of your jaw muscles come together and enable you to open and close your jaw. The TMJ is complex and can perform several different types of movements, from opening and closing to rotating and gliding. And it’s one of the most-used joints in the body when you consider how often you move your jaw when speaking and eating. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMD, results in chronic pain in the jaw and face of some patients. Sometimes it may be the cause of headache pain. The structure of the TMJ includes a small disc and a ball and socket. The disc acts as a cushion when the jaw is opening, closing, and moving. When something causes this joint to perform improperly, significant pain can develop. Your dentist can help to determine the cause of your jaw or facial pain through an examination, X-ray, etc. Because jaw or facial pain can result from a variety of causes, it is important to talk with your dentist about causes and treatment options for TMD. Once TMD has been diagnosed, your dentist can explain what might be causing the disorder and outline steps for reducing the problem. Sometimes a long-term treatment plan for TMD is necessary. Be sure to express your concerns and questions throughout the treatment process.Treating TMJ Pain
